1. With our early winter cold snap, the lake has definitely iced up. As such, this is a good time to remind winter lake users (and particularly children) about the need to exercise particular care and caution when venturing out on the ice when it does form. On the following page is some information on General Ice Thickness Guidelines. The MPOA website (wlmpoa.org) also has a video posted on how someone falling through the ice can perform a "self-rescue". https://youtu.be/QKpAzvXSldA An additional video that also describes how to safely rescue someone who fell through the ice can be found at: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ice-rescue-save-tips-advice-video-cold-1.7074714
2. Winter lake users are also reminded of the presence of the rip-rap collars around O'Brien Shoals and Wickline Island, and that ice formation may have changed in those areas of the lake that were dredged or have submerged springs. Do not assume that because someone says safe ice is present at one location that the ice is safe everywhere.
3. Per MPOA regulations, ice fishing shanties must be removed from the Lake daily and must always display the name and address of the owner.
4. Any recreational vehicle on the ice must properly display a current MPOA winter decal. Automobiles, trucks and SUVs are strictly prohibited from entering upon Wonder Lake ice at any time. Anyone who is observed violating this regulation will be ticketed by the Wonder Lake Police Department with a fine of not less than $50.00 nor more than $500.00.
5. The Lake Use Commission received a report of a lake bottom aerator being operated that was causing open water along the shoreline that was also extending on to adjoining neighboring shorelines. The landowner in question was contacted, and they agreed to turn the aerator off. It turns out that they are new residents who were not aware of the MPOA regulations, or the potential safety hazard for winter lake users.
6. The MPOA has received an updated proposal for repairs to the shaft of the west spillway sluicegate, and the installation of new protective measures for both the west and east sluiceways. The work will be conducted as soon as weather conditions allow safe access for the necessary vehicles and equipment along the west dam embankment.
